Ad Aritzo una stretta scalinata conduce ad una vecchia e massiccia costruzione del Seicento adibita, fino agli anni Quaranta del secolo scorso, a carcere di massima sicurezza. Nel 1793 vi furono tenuti prigionieri alcuni ufficiali francesi, catturati durante un tentativo di sbarco da parte di Napoleone.

L’edificio, realizzato con pietra scistosa, fango e legno di castagno, è caratterizzato da un sottopassaggio a sesto acuto, di origine spagnola, chiamato “sa bovida” (la volta). Gli ambienti interni, oggi completamente ristrutturati, comprendono quattro locali che anticamente erano utilizzati come postazione di sorveglianza e come celle femminili e maschili.

Uno di questi ambienti è privo di qualunque apertura alle pareti, tant’è che in tempi recenti è stato aggiunto un portone che ne permette l’utilizzo. Nel cortile interno si trova un’antica meridiana.

Il percorso espositivo si sviluppa nei vari ambienti e comprende l’allestimento di una mostra permanente intitolata “Bruxas”, dedicata alla magia e alla stregoneria in Sardegna tra XV e XVII secolo. Un’approfondita ricerca storica ha consentito di incentrare la scelta espositiva su oggetti rituali di tipo religioso, magico e stregonesco che coinvolgono emotivamente il visitatore e lo introducono al mondo delle credenze popolari e delle più terribili maledizioni.

Una parte della mostra è dedicata all’Inquisizione e comprende una collezione di strumenti di tortura, utilizzati per secoli su migliaia di innocenti, accusati di stregoneria e di malefici.

La visita guidata permette di approfondire la conoscenza sulle antiche storie e i racconti di diavoli e streghe in un crescendo di magia, fascino e mistero.
